The A1696 is a Hall effect sensor IC that integrates EMC protection elements specifically designed for crankshaft applications. The IC provides true zero-speed digital crankshaft detection, with speed and direction information transmitted by a variable pulse width output protocol. The open-drain output provides a voltage such that the time between the electrical falling edge (period) corresponds to the speed, and the time between the falling edge and the corresponding rising edge (pulse width) indicates the direction.
The device can be optimized with a programmable EEPROM option for crankshaft inspection applications and can be used to detect ring magnets or in combination with appropriate reverse-biased magnets and iron-containing targets. Three Hall plates are used to create three differential channels, used in conjunction with advanced directional detection algorithms, to produce highly accurate outputs across the entire air gap and operating temperature range. The combination of high accuracy and directional information provides the absolute position of most crank targets in the case of engine backlash, making it ideal for stop/start engine designs.
