SAMSUNG recently announced three new mobile image sensors designed for the main and secondary cameras of smartphones: the ISOCELL HP9, ISOCELL GNJ, and ISOCELL JN5.
As users' expectations for the quality and performance of smartphone cameras continue to rise, the need for great photos from all angles is at an all-time high. To this end, SAMSUNG launched its latest mobile image sensor product matrix, allowing consumers to take photos from all angles, can take satisfactory image effects, for mobile phone photography opened a new world.
"Improving image sensor performance and gradually bridging the gap between the primary and secondary cameras to provide a consistent photography experience from all angles has become a new direction for the industry." Jesuk Lee, SAMSUNG Executive vice President and CTO of the System LSI Sensor Business Team, said, "We will continue to break down technical barriers and advance new industry standards through our image sensor product lineup that integrates SAMSUNG's latest technological advancements."
ISOCELL HP9: The industry's first 200 megapixel telephoto sensor for smartphones
The ISOCELL HP9 features a 1/1.4-inch optical specification with 200 million 0.56 micron (μm) pixels built in.
SAMSUNG's exclusive high-index microlens uses a new material that enables the HP9 sensor to precisely direct more light to the corresponding RGB filter, significantly increasing its sensitivity. Compared to the previous generation, the HP9 has a 12% improvement in speed (based on signal-to-noise ratio 10) and a 10% improvement in autofocus contrast performance, enabling more vivid color reproduction and more powerful focusing performance.
It is worth mentioning that HP9 performs particularly well in low-light environments, solving the common problems faced by traditional telephoto cameras. Its Tetra²pixel technology combines 16 pixels (4x4) into a 12-megapixel, 2.24μm large sensor to take sharper portrait photos even in dark environments and create a compelling out-of-focus blurry effect.
As the size of the main camera in high-end smartphones increases, the space for the telephoto camera is also increasing. The HP9's large optical format makes it suitable for telephoto modules, with performance comparable to high-end main cameras in image quality, autofocus, high dynamic range (HDR), and frames per second (fps).
The HP9 uses the remosaic algorithm to provide a 2x or 4x intra-sensor zoom mode that achieves up to 12x zoom when paired with a 3x telephoto module while maintaining sharp image quality.
ISOCELL GNJ: Innovation that integrates SAMSUNG's cutting-edge pixel technology
The ISOCELL GNJ is a dual-pixel sensor with 50 million 1.0 micron (μm) pixels in an optical format of 1/1.57 inch.
Dual-pixel technology allows each pixel to accommodate two photodiodes, enabling fast and accurate autofocus (similar to how the human eye focuses) while capturing full color information, enabling fast focus and maintaining image quality.
GNJ combines dual-pixel technology with in-sensor zoom capabilities to provide a sharper picture in video mode and high-resolution images without artifacts or moires in photo mode.
The newly improved high transmittance anti-refraction layer (ARL), combined with SAMSUNG's proprietary high refraction microlens, not only improves transmittance and reduces unwanted reflections, but also ensures that dark areas are not over-brighened, resulting in more accurate photos and better image detail retention.
In addition, GNJ uses upgraded pixel deep channel isolation (DTI) materials from polysilicon to silicon oxide to minimize crosstalk between adjacent pixels. This allows the sensor to capture more detailed and precise images.
All of these innovations were achieved with even lower power consumption, with 29 percent lower power consumption in preview mode and 34 percent lower power consumption in 4K 60fps video mode.
ISOCELL JN5: Wide color range and excellent autofocus performance for a consistent photo experience from all angles
The ISOCELL JN5 is in 1/2.76-inch optical format and has 50 million 0.64 micron (μm) pixels.
The sensor uses Dual VTG technology, which increases charge transfer within the pixel and greatly reduces noise in extremely low light for sharper image quality.
The JN5 utilizes Super four-phase Detection (Super QPD) autofocus technology to adjust focus by comparing the phase difference in the vertical and horizontal directions to capture minute details of fast-moving objects with minimal jitter.
In addition, JN5 uses dual slope gain (DSG) technology to enhance high dynamic range (HDR). The technology amplifies the analog light information entering the pixel into two signals, converts it into a digital signal, and then combines it into one data, thus expanding the range of colors that the sensor can generate.
The hardware Remosaic algorithm increases the camera's shooting speed while enabling real-time zoom without delay in both preview and shooting modes.
The JN5's ultra-thin optical format makes it highly versatile and can be used in both the main and secondary cameras, including wide-angle, ultra-wide-angle, front-facing and telephoto cameras, ensuring a consistent photo experience from different angles.
