Introduction (Renesas) ISL9238CHRTZ: Lift and narrow VDC charger with SMBus interface and USB-C OTG

Overview

The ISL9238C is a buck-boost narrow output voltage Direct current (NVDC) charger. The ISL9238C provides NVDC charging, system bus conditioning and protection for tablets, ultrabooks, laptops, mobile power supplies and any USB-C interface platform. Advanced Renesas R3™ technology provides high light load efficiency and fast transient response. In charging mode, the ISL9238C accepts input power from a variety of DC power sources, such as traditional AC/DC charger adapters, USB PD ports, and travel adapters, and safely charges battery packs using up to four Li-ion batteries in series.

As an NVDC topological charger, the ISL9238C also adjusts the system output to a narrow DC range for a stable system bus voltage. System power can be provided by an adapter, battery, or a combination of both. The ISL9238C can run on battery only, with an adapter only, or with both connected. In order to comply with the Intel IMVP8 standard system, the ISL9238C has a PSSYS (System Power Monitor) function to provide an analog signal that represents the total platform power. PSYS outputs are connected to a variety of Renesas Electronics IMVP8 core regulators to provide IMVP8-compliant power domain functionality. The ISL9238C supports reverse buck, boost, or buck - boost operations for 2 to 4 battery input ports. The ISL9238C provides SMBus/I2C serial communication, allowing many key parameters to be programmed to provide custom solutions.
