The PCA9306JKZ is a dual bi-directional I²C and SMBus voltage level converter with enable (EN) input, operating in the range 1.0 V to 3.6 V and 1.8 V to 5.5 V. The device is available in an 8-X2SON package.

The PCA9306 is not a bus buffer like the PCA9509 or PCA9517A, and cannot provide two level shifts and capacitors on either side of the physically isolated bus when both sides are connected. The PCA9306 can only isolate the two sides when the device is disabled and provide voltage level conversion when activated.


The PCA9306 can also be used to run two buses, one operating at 400 kHz and the other at 100 kHz. If the two buses operate at different frequencies, the 100 kHz bus must be isolated when the other bus needs to operate at 400 kHz. If the main device is operating at 400 kHz, the maximum system operating frequency may be less than 400 kHz due to the delay added by the converter.


As with standard I²C bus systems, a pull-up resistor is required to provide a logical high level to the converter bus. The PCA9306 has a standard open-set configuration with an I²C bus. The size of these pull-up resistors depends on the system, but each side of the converter must have pull-up resistors. The device is designed to work with SMBus devices and Plus I²C bus devices in standard mode, fast mode and ultra-fast mode. The maximum frequency depends on the RC time constant, but usually > 2 MHz is supported.

1.2V Vref(1) and 1.8V, 2.5V, 3.3V or 5 V Vbias(ref)(2)

1.8V Vref(1) and 3.3V or 5 V Vbias(ref)(2)

2.5 V Vref(1) and 5 V Vbias(ref)(2)

3.3V Vref(1) and 5 V Vbias(ref)(2)

Provides bidirectional voltage conversion without directional pins

A low 3.5Ω on-status connection between the input and output ports provides less signal distortion

Open I²C bus I/O ports (SCL1, SDA1, SCL2, and SDA2)

5 V withstand I²C bus I/O port, support mixed mode signal operation

EN = At low voltages, the SCL1, SDA1, SCL2 and SDA2 pins are high impedance

Lockless operation

Straight-through leads facilitate the layout of printed circuit boards

ESD protection: Press JESD22-A114 over 2000 V HBM, press JESD22-A115 over 200 V MM, press JESD22-C101 over 1000 V CDM

Available in packages: SO8, TSSOP8, VSSOP8, XQFN8, XSON8, XSON8U
