ST has introduced the VL53L4ED, a single-zone time-of-flight (ToF) sensor with an extended operating temperature range of -40°C to 105°C. The VL53L4ED is suitable for industrial equipment, smart factory equipment, robot guidance systems, security monitoring systems and other applications with harsh environments. The VL53L4ED is suitable for applications in harsh environments such as industrial equipment, smart factory equipment, robot guidance systems, outdoor lighting control, security monitoring systems, etc., and improves proximity detection accuracy and measurement distance in conditions of high ambient light.

The VL53L4ED, a new member of ST's VL53L4 family of direct time-of-flight sensors, integrates a laser emitter and a single photon avalanche diode (SPAD) detector array in an easy-to-use, all-in-one module, providing reliable measurements even under extreme temperature conditions. The next-generation laser provides excellent ranging performance and proximity detection accuracy in environments with high ambient light. In addition, the sensors have a built-in processor that enables a power-saving autonomous mode of operation, reducing the resource demands on the host controller system.

ST's new ToF sensors provide highly accurate ranging of objects up to 1,150 mm away over the entire field of view and over the entire temperature range. A special setup allows the sensor to accurately measure objects up to 800 mm away in conditions of strong ambient light.The VL53L4ED sensor maintains good linearity down to 1 mm and supports ranging frequencies up to 100 Hz.

Developers can take advantage of the STM32Cube ecosystem's X-CUBE-TOF1 extension software package to accelerate VL53L4 series sensing project development. The ready-to-use software also includes the STSW-IMG034 driver, which turns the VL53L4ED or VL53L4CD into an ultra-low-power proximity detector with interrupt commands for user detection, system activation and contactless control. In addition, there are level detection code examples in the STSW-IMG039 software package. Development hardware includes the X-NUCLEO-53L4A3, an expansion board for the NUCLEO-F401RE microcontroller development board, which simplifies running code examples and application development, and the SATEL-VL53L4ED adapter board for prototyping.

The VL53L4 sensors are pin-compatible across the board and are available in a 4.4 mm x 2.4 mm x 1 mm high LGA package. The new VL53L4ED is now in production.
