The latest news is that Apple is accelerating its plan to develop its own 5G baseband chips, with the aim of getting rid of its reliance on Qualcomm.In 2025 Apple will have two iPhones with self-developed 5G baseband chips, the iPhone SE 4 released in the first quarter and the iPhone 17 Slim released in the third quarter.
Previously, Apple introduced Intel's baseband chips in 2016, starting with the iPhone 7 series, in order to reduce its reliance on Qualcomm. in 2018, Apple CEO Tim Cook ordered the company to design and manufacture its own modem chips, and recruited thousands of engineers to make it happen. in july 2019, Apple acquired Intel's baseband chip division for $1bn. gaining more than 17,000 patents and about 2,200 employees.
Although Apple signed a baseband chip supply agreement with Qualcomm in September 2023, Qualcomm will supply 5G baseband chips and radio frequency systems for the 2024, 2025 and 2026 iPhones, but Apple is also actively developing its own 5G baseband chips. This ‘two-handed’ strategy is considered part of Cook's supply chain management approach, designed to gradually solve the problem of dependence on Qualcomm.
The launch of Apple's own 5G baseband chips is expected to improve the performance and speed of the iPhone, while providing Apple with more flexibility and room for innovation.
