Infineon releases next-generation PSOC™ Edge portfolio, delivering powerful AI capabilities for IoT, consumer and industrial applications

Infineon Technologies AG has released details of its new PSOC™ Edge microcontroller (MCU) family, which has been designed to be optimised for machine learning (ML) applications. The three new PSOC™ Edge MCU families, E81, E83 and E84, offer scalability and compatibility in terms of performance, features and memory options. They all come with comprehensive system design tools and software, enabling developers to quickly turn concepts into products and bring to market new Internet of Things (IoT), consumer and industrial applications that support machine learning.

Infineon's new PSOC™ Edge E81, E83 and E84 MCUs are based on the high-performance Arm® Cortex®-M55 core with support for the Arm® Helium™ DSP instruction set and paired with the Arm® Ethos™-U55 neural network processor, as well as on the Cortex®-M33 core paired with Infineon's ultra-low-power NNLite (a proprietary hardware accelerator for accelerating neural networks). In addition, all three families support a rich peripheral set, on-chip memory, robust hardware security features and a variety of connectivity peripheral options, including USB HS/FS with built-in PHY, CAN bus, Ethernet, support for connectivity to WiFi® 6, BT/BLE, and the Matter protocol, among others. psoc™ Edge E81 features Arm® Helium™ DSP technology and the Infineon NNLite neural network (NN) accelerator.The PSOC™ Edge E83 and E84 have a built-in Arm® Ethos™-U55 micro NPU processor, which delivers up to 480x better machine learning performance compared to existing Cortex®-M systems, and they support the Infineon NNlite neural network accelerator for low-power computing for machine learning applications.

Target applications for the PSOC™ Edge E8x family include human-machine interfaces (HMIs) in home appliances and industrial equipment, smart home and security systems, robotics and wearables. All three families support activation and control via voice/audio sensing, with the E83 and E84 MCUs providing enhancements for advanced HMI implementations, including machine learning wake-up, visual position detection and face/object recognition.The PSOC™ Edge E84 family also adds low-power graphical displays (up to 1028x768 support) to its rich feature set.
