On 6 September, Qualcomm CEO Cristiano Amon stated in an interview with Bloomberg that Intel's current chip manufacturing capabilities do not yet meet Qualcomm's requirements.
‘Intel is not currently a viable option for us,’ Amon stated, ‘but we anticipate it may become one in the future.’
Amon added that should Intel advance its process technology to produce more efficient chips, Qualcomm would consider becoming a customer. Until then, the company will continue relying on its existing partners – TSMC and Samsung Electronics.
As a fabless chip designer, Qualcomm, like most industry players, outsources its chip production to TSMC and Samsung.
The majority of Qualcomm's current revenue stems from smartphone processor sales. Facing a slowing global mobile market, the company is diversifying its business into emerging sectors like automotive, aiming to generate $22 billion (IT Home note: approximately RMB 156.921 billion at current exchange rates) in revenue from its automotive and connected devices business by 2029.
Earlier on the day of the interview, Qualcomm announced it had developed an autonomous driving system for BMW Group's newly launched iX3 sports utility vehicle (SUV).
Unlike peers pursuing aggressive strategies to rapidly capture the market through high-profile autonomous driving claims, Qualcomm has adopted a more measured approach. It first established dominance in infotainment system chips before gradually expanding into driver assistance and autonomous driving technologies.
Amon stated that the new system's computational power rivals that of data centre servers while consuming relatively less energy. ‘We design all our chips assuming they're powered by batteries, not wall sockets,’ he remarked. ‘This approach delivers formidable computing capabilities while maintaining exceptional battery life.’
