The widespread adoption of cloud-based AI applications has generated increased demands for data storage. Particularly for applications such as data lakes, which require massive data throughput and high-speed processing, achieving high-density, large-scale storage within a single server rack presents significant advantages. This approach combines the cost-effectiveness and large capacity of HDDs with the high performance and rapid throughput of SSDs, offering enterprises a superior solution for deploying AI training, inference, and application implementation at lower costs.


Recently, Kioxia officially launched its LC9 Series, CM9 Series, and CD9P Series enterprise-grade and data centre-grade SSDs. These new series are better equipped to meet AI computing storage demands and are suitable for diverse application scenarios including cloud services, online transactions, and virtualisation.


LC9 Series: Capacity up to 245.76TB


The LC9 Series offers capacities up to 245.76TB across multiple form factors including 2.5-inch, EDSFF E3.S, and EDSFF E3.L. Designed specifically for the performance and efficiency demands of generative AI applications, this high-capacity solution It accommodates both the massive datasets required for training large language models (LLMs) and the creation of embedded data and vector databases supporting Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) inference. This high-density storage solution balances substantial capacity with high speed and efficiency.

Beyond its substantial capacity, the LC9 series pioneers the use of 32-die stacked 2Tb BiCS FLASH QLC 3D flash memory. Leveraging CBA technology, it achieves enhanced performance, scalability, and storage density, delivering 8TB capacity within a compact 154-pin BGA package.


Indeed, the KIOXIA LC9 series presents an ideal solution for applications demanding massive data throughput and high-speed processing, such as data lakes. Compared to HDDs, which frequently cause performance bottlenecks and lead to costly GPU resource idleness, the KIOXIA LC9 SSD achieves higher storage density within a compact footprint. A single drive can deliver up to 245.76TB of capacity, sufficiently replacing multiple high-energy-consumption HDDs. This ultimately achieves outstanding performance, lower power consumption, reduced drive bay occupancy, and enhanced thermal efficiency, thereby significantly lowering the total cost of ownership (TCO).


CM9 Series: The Flagship TLC Innovation


Compared to QLC SSDs, TLC SSDs deliver superior performance across a broader range of applications. This led to the creation of KIOXIA's flagship enterprise-grade CM9 series SSD. Also based on the PCIe 5.0 NVMe specification, it employs KIOXIA's eighth-generation BiCS FLASH 3D NAND technology alongside CBA technology, achieving significant advancements in efficiency, performance, density, and sustainability.

The CM9 Series features a dual-port design, available in 2.5-inch and M.2 form factors, supporting PCIe 5.0, NVMe 2.0, NVMe-MI 1.2c, and OCP v2.5 specifications. Sequential read/write performance nearly reaches the upper limit of the PCIe 5.0 specification, achieving 14.8GB/s and 11GB/s respectively, alongside random performance of 3,400K IOPS (QD512) and 800K IOPS (QD32), with capacities extending up to 61.44TB.


Consequently, the CM9 series effectively addresses the demand for more advanced solid-state storage infrastructure in applications such as artificial intelligence, machine learning, and high-performance computing.


CD9P Series: The Mainstream Choice for Data Centres


The acclaimed CD series welcomes the new CD9P SSD upgrade. Also built on PCIe 5.0 NVMe, the CD9P series utilises eighth-generation BiCS FLASH 3D TLC flash technology combined with CBA architecture, delivering significant improvements in efficiency, performance, and storage density compared to the previous CD generation.

Available in both 2.5-inch and EDSFF E3.S form factors, the CD9P series achieves sequential read/write speeds of 14.8GB/s and 7GB/s respectively, alongside random read/write performance of 2,600 KIOPS (QD512) and 750KIOPS (QD32). Capacity has been expanded to 61.44TB, matching the CM9 series.


The CD9P series addresses cost considerations for data centre and AI server storage deployments. While delivering high cost-effectiveness, it maintains high throughput, low latency, and stability. This satisfies the speed and responsiveness demands of AI, machine learning, and HPC workloads, ensuring GPUs can access data promptly and operate efficiently.


From enterprise-grade and data centre-grade TLC SSDs to enterprise-grade QLC SSDs, Kioxia's new solid-state storage solutions are now advancing, providing reliable storage support for complex applications such as AI large model training and cloud services.
