Renesas, a global semiconductor solutions provider, announced today the launch of the RAA489300/RAA489301 high-performance step-down controllers. This new controller adopts a three-level step-down topology and is specifically designed for battery charging and voltage regulation in USB-C systems. It is suitable for multi-port USB-PD chargers, portable power supplies, PC docking stations, robots, drones, and other applications that require high-efficiency DC/DC controllers.

The three-level step-down converter topology adopted by this new type of IC features outstanding efficiency and can significantly reduce the inductance required by the step-down converter. Its innovative design can minimize power loss and reduce system size to the greatest extent, making it an ideal choice for compact high-performance applications.

Compared with the traditional two-level step-down converter, the three-level topology adds two extra switches and a flyover capacitor. Flyover capacitors can reduce the voltage stress on the switch, enabling designers to use low-voltage FETs with a better quality factor, thereby effectively reducing conduction losses and switching losses. In addition, this topology also supports the use of smaller inductors, with the peak-to-peak ripple being approximately 25% of that of two-level converters, thereby reducing the core and DC resistance losses of the inductor.
