On 11 August, according to reports from Reuters and South Korean media outlets SEDaily and Hankyung, Choi Joon-yong, an executive from SK Hynix's HBM business planning organisation, stated that the overall AI memory market is expected to achieve an annualised growth rate of 30% over the next six years until 2030.


He noted that there is a strong correlation between AI infrastructure development and HBM procurement. Tech giants such as Amazon, Microsoft, and Google have consecutively increased their AI infrastructure spending, indicating robust and sustained demand for AI from end-users, which is positive for the HBM market led by SK Hynix.


This SK Hynix executive believes that the next step in AI infrastructure within the memory sector will be a shift from JEDEC-standard HBM to HBM customised according to each customer's specific needs, as generic HBM products cannot meet the differentiated requirements of AI chip manufacturers. Customers seek highly customised HBM, and this segment of the market is expected to grow to hundreds of billions of dollars by 2030.


At FMS 2025, SK Hynix stated that its HBM4 memory can achieve bandwidth exceeding 2TB/s, with energy efficiency improvements of approximately 40% and thermal resistance enhancements of approximately 4% compared to HBM3E. SK Hynix previously promoted HBM4's energy efficiency improvements at around 30% for the first half of this year.


SK Hynix noted that the power consumption of HBM now accounts for 18% of the total energy demand of AI servers, up from 12% several years ago. An additional 10% improvement in energy efficiency translates to a 2% reduction in server energy consumption.
