To better support server original equipment manufacturers (Oems), storage systems, data centers and enterprise customers, Microchip Technology Inc. has launched the Adaptec® SmartRAID 4300 series NVMe® RAID storage accelerators. This is a feature-rich and secure high-performance software-defined storage (SDS) solution that supports RAID, specifically designed for NVMe deployments. This series of accelerators is particularly suitable for modern artificial intelligence data center environments. In such environments, accelerating access to NVMe storage is crucial for supporting high-intensity workloads and maximizing the overall system performance.
The SmartRAID 4300 series adopts a brand-new NVMe RAID architecture design, separating Microchip's intelligent storage platform into independent software and hardware components. This series of accelerators uses Microchip's PCIe® storage controllers as the underlying hardware to support CPU offloading and RAID acceleration, and separates the storage software stack to optimize data flow and connection performance through the mother-end extended PCIe architecture. In a large number of internal tests, the input/output (I/O) performance of the SmartRAID 4300 series has been improved by up to 7 times compared with the previous generation of products.
The intelligent storage software runs on the host CPU to maximize the performance of I/O data streams: write operations are directly transmitted from the host CPU to the NVMe endpoint devices at their respective PCIe generation rates, while redundant computing based on parity (XOR) is offloaded from the host CPU to the accelerator hardware for execution. This architecture overcomes the inherent bottlenecks of traditional in-line storage solutions, helps the SmartRAID 4300 accelerator achieve high scalability and flexibility, and supports 4th and 5th generation PCIe host cpus. It can connect up to 32 CPU-connected x4 NVMe devices and 64 logical drives or RAID arrays.
Brian McCarson, corporate vice president of Microchip's Data Center Solutions Business unit, said: "We adopt an innovative solution that separates software and hardware, breaking through the limitations of the traditional architecture and no longer relying on PCIe host interface slots to handle all data streams." The SmartRAID 4300 series enables us to further enhance performance, efficiency and applicability, and better support modern enterprise-level infrastructure systems.
The SmartRAID 4300 series supports NVMe and SSDS suitable for cloud deployment, providing customized solutions to meet diverse enterprise needs. Through specific architecture and semiconductor design technologies (including automatic idle of processor cores and autonomous power consumption reduction functions), this solution optimizes energy efficiency and adopts multiple protection mechanisms to ensure end-to-end data integrity. This series of accelerators is equipped with multiple security features, including hardware root of trust, secure boot and update, authentication mechanisms, and support for self-encrypting drives (SED), providing enterprise-level data protection.
The SmartRAID 4300 series continues the advanced functions, features and hardware offloading capabilities of Microchip's previous generation of in-line enterprise-level storage products. At the same time, it has good scalability in performance and can be synchronically expanded with the host, interconnect architecture and NVMe endpoints directly connected to the CPU. Configuration and management tools
The SmartRAID 4300 series is equipped with a set of host management tools, including the HTML5-based web graphical user interface tool Adaptec maxView™, the command-line tool ARCCONF CLI, and related plugins for remote and local management of enterprise-level and data center server platforms. These tools support in-band network management, can be accessed through standard desktop and mobile device browsers, and are compatible with Adaptec SmartRAID tools for easy system integration. For the management of out-of-band substrate management controllers (BMC), the SmartRAID 4300 series supports management protocols based on the Distributed Management Task Group (DMTF) standard, and supports platform-level data model (PLDM) and Redfish® device Enabler (RDE) through the MCTP protocol.
