According to foreign media reports, Horse Technologies, a division of low-emission powertrain developer Horse Powertrain, has released a new integrated hybrid drive unit, the HR18 HEV. This is the first complete powertrain unit designed, developed, and manufactured under the Horse Powertrain brand, jointly developed by the company's R&D centres in Romania and Spain, and will be produced at its factories in Bursa, Turkey, and Valladolid, Spain.
This hybrid powertrain integrates key technologies from Horse Technologies' product portfolio into an efficient unit capable of powering various mobility solutions. The solution integrates an internal combustion engine, electric motor, transmission, and power electronics.
To coincide with the launch of the new powertrain, Horse Powertrain has begun production of its HR18 internal combustion engine. This new 1.8-litre four-cylinder gasoline direct-injection engine weighs just 100 kg and delivers up to 80 kW (108 PS) of power and 172 N·m of torque.
The HR18 is an Atkinson cycle engine specifically designed for hybrid powertrains, compatible with flexible fuel blends containing up to 10% ethanol. The engine fully meets Euro 6 EBIS and Euro 7 emissions standards, developed by Horse Technologies' R&D centre in Bucharest, Romania, with casting, machining, and assembly carried out at its facilities in Valladolid and Bursa.
The HR18 HEV powertrain integrates the BTA Gen2 lithium-ion battery developed by its Valladolid R&D centre. The battery weighs only 36 kg, can store up to 1.4 kWh of energy, has a peak discharge rate of 11.6 Ah, and operates within a voltage range of 150-279 V. Despite its compact dimensions (707 x 422 x 190 mm), the BTA Gen2 includes two modules with a total of 34 cells and an integrated cooling system.
The HR18 powertrain's transmission system uses the DB45S clutchless transmission manufactured in Seville, Spain, which delivers a maximum torque of 436 N·m. The powertrain also integrates the 5DH motor produced by Horse Technologies at its factory in Aveiro, Portugal, with a peak power of 50 kW and peak torque of 212 N·m.
Matias Giannini, CEO of Horse Powertrain, stated: "The HR18 HEV is specifically designed to address the market challenges faced by original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) today. In many markets, HEVs are becoming the most in-demand powertrain category. Many brands and OEMs are investing heavily to enhance their HEV product lines while facing unprecedented commercial pressure. By addressing the production and integration challenges of high-performance systems, we enable our OEM partners to focus on core innovation and differentiation areas."
