STMicroelectronics has launched the new generation of integrated gate drivers, STDRIVE102H and STDRIVE102BH, for controlling three-phase brushless motors, enhancing the performance, energy efficiency and economy of consumer electronics and industrial equipment.
The STDRIVE102H is suitable for single-resistor current sampling motor control schemes, while the STDRIVE102BH is suitable for three-resistor current sampling motor control designs. The operating voltage range is from 6V to 50V. Designers can easily configure the driver through two analog pins and set the drive current of the gate driver with a simple resistor voltage divider. The switching rate can also be limited without using a gate resistor. The new driver features a low-current standby mode, which can effectively protect the performance of the battery. It is suitable for cordless power tools and household appliances, electric bicycles, mobile robots, and industrial drive motors.
The new gate driver integrates a charge pump circuit, allowing the on-time of the upper bridge arm MOSFET to be unrestricted and arbitrarily long, thereby simplifying the design of applications that require a 100% PWM duty cycle. In addition, the charge pump ensures that the gate-source voltages of the upper and lower bridge arm MOSFETs are the same to balance the behavior of the power stage. In addition, the internal low-dropout regulator (LDO) can provide 12V and 3.3V voltages for the lower bridge arm circuit and analog front end (AFE) of the driver, and can also power external components.
Other functions include comprehensive and complete electrical and overheat protection functions. In addition to under-voltage locking (UVLO) and thermal shutdown functions, the new product also features monitoring of the drain-source voltage (VDS) of the upper and lower bridge arm MOSFETs, and adds redundant overcurrent protection functions. When any protection mechanism is triggered, the fault signal pin responds quickly, which can enhance the safety and reliability of the system.
Whether the motor control adopts field-oriented control (FOC) or the six-step motor control method, the evaluation boards EVLDRIVE102H and EVLDRIVE102BH can both accelerate the system development cycle. These two evaluation boards are equipped with motor back electromotive force (BEMF) sensors and input pins for connecting rotor position sensors (if the motor has this configuration) to enhance control accuracy. The board also provides a standard pin header interface for connecting to the STM32 Nucleo microcontroller motherboard. The X-CUBE-MCSDK STM32 Motor Control Software Development Kit (MCSDK) provides engineers with the tools and codes required for motor startup and operation as well as application development.
