The constantly evolving requirements for security and functional safety, coupled with the increasing complexity of real-time embedded applications, are driving designers to seek innovative solutions that can achieve higher precision, higher reliability and comply with industry standards. To address these challenges, Microchip Technology Inc. In its dsPIC33A DSC product line, the dsPIC33AK512MPS512 and dsPIC33AK512MC510 digital signal controller (DSC) series have been newly added. These new devices support the implementation of computationally intensive control algorithms, which can enhance energy efficiency in motor control, AI server power supplies, energy storage systems, and complex sensor signal processing based on machine learning (ML) inference.
Joe Thomsen, corporate vice president of Microchip in charge of the Digital Signal Controller business unit, said: "With the continuous growth of AI servers and data centers, the demand for more efficient power conversion is crucial." With the dedicated peripherals and high-performance cores of the dsPIC33AK512MPS series, developers can now achieve significant energy-saving effects and reduce the power board footprint. The new dsPIC33A DSC series integrates advanced features and is capable of achieving efficient and reliable designs for modern power conversion, motor control and sensing applications.
The dsPIC33AK512MPS series offers precise and high-speed control through industry-leading 78 ps high-resolution pulse width modulation (PWM) and low-latency 40 Msps analog-to-digital converter (ADC). This is crucial for optimizing the fast and precise control loops necessary for the performance of DC-DC converters based on silicon carbide (SiC) and gallium nitride (GaN). The dsPIC33AK512MPS device features advanced security characteristics, an integrated touch controller, and a high pin count of up to 128 pins. The dsPIC33AK512MC series is designed to offer a low-latency 40 Msps ADC and a 1.25 ns PWM resolution, providing functional and cost-optimized solutions for multi-motor control and complex embedded applications.
The dsPIC33A DSC series features up to 512 KB of flash memory and a rich set of peripherals. It integrates a double-precision floating-point unit to accelerate mathematical calculations and seamlessly adopts model-based design code using a 32-bit architecture. Enhanced instruction set and digital signal processing (DSP) capabilities, including single-cycle MAC (product accumulation) operations and a 200 MHz core speed, make them highly efficient in low-latency, real-time control applications. Supported by the MPLAB® machine learning development kit, the dsPIC33A device simplifies the ML workflow by automating data preparation, feature extraction, training, validation, and firmware transformation for optimizing models.
Norbert Weiss, the executive director of Lauterbach GmbH, said: "Microchip's dsPIC33A DSC provides high performance and reliability for complex automotive electronic control units (ECUs)." With the support of our latest TRACE32® solution, dsPIC33A DSC customers can use leading debugging and tracking tools from the very beginning of the development process to accelerate time to market.
With a series of hardware safety features, the dsPIC33AK512MPS/MC DSC complies with functional safety standards and is developed in accordance with the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) 26262 and the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) 61508 processes, suitable for safety-critical automotive and industrial applications. To further enhance system-level security, the dsPIC33AK512MPS DSC series incorporates an integrated encryption accelerator and flash memory security module, supporting immutable root of trust, secure boot, secure firmware upgrade, and secure debugging capabilities.
Andrew Longhurst, Executive Director of WITTENSTEIN High Integrity Systems (WHIS), said: "The combination of dsPIC33A DSC with our pre-certified Safety-critical real-time operating system SAFERTOS® can simplify the development of safety-critical applications." This system-level solution enables our customers to provide reliable and efficient solutions that meet automotive and industrial safety standards.
Development tools
The dsPIC33AK512MPS/MC DSC is supported by the Microchip development tool ecosystem, including the MPLAB XC-DSC compiler, the MPLAB Code Configurator (MCC), and the MPLAB ML development kit. Provide a separate dual-in-line module to support the development of motor control, digital power conversion and general embedded applications. These DSCS are also supported by partner software and tools, including WHIS 'SAFERTOS® real-time operating system and Lauterbach's TRACE32® debugger, among others.
