On 27 May, South Korea's TheElec reported that Samsung Electronics disclosed to customers on the 26th of local time that it will soon stop production of MLC NAND flash memory, and that it plans to accept the last orders for MLC chips next month.
TheElec reports that Samsung also informed some of its customers of its plans to raise MLC prices at the same time as it communicated its final MLC NAND scheduling plans, prompting customers to start looking for new alternative suppliers.
LG Display is also said to be looking for alternative MLC NAND suppliers to Samsung, including 4GB eMMC for large OLED panels.
Until now, LGD has been using storage solutions from Samsung, ArmorMan, and Epistar Technology (ESMT), with Epistar's eMMCs packaged with Samsung MLC NAND, while ArmorMan uses its own MLC NAND for supply. This means that if Samsung Electronics MLC NAND production is discontinued, LGD's existing suppliers will be left with only Armor Man, and LG Display is looking for more suppliers.
Samsung Electronics and other companies to supply 4GB eMMC to LGD at a price of about $ 2 (note: the current exchange rate of about 14.4 yuan), the source said. Due to Samsung Electronics MLC NAND production plans to stop, resulting in an immediate increase in the price of eMMC products. However, since such eMMC are using traditional processes and low material costs, it is expected that the impact on LGD's manufacturing costs will not be very large, but only to find new suppliers to some trouble.
‘MLC NAND accounts for a negligible share of Samsung Electronics‘ sales’ and ‘exiting the business is a natural process,’ industry sources said.
With the termination of the MLC NAND business, Samsung expects to focus its resources on the TLC and QLC product lines. According to market researcher Mordor Intelligence, TLC currently accounts for 62 per cent of the global NAND flash memory market, making it the dominant technology in the industry.
