NXP Semiconductors announced the launch of OrangeBox 2.0, its second-generation OrangeBox automotive-grade development platform designed to facilitate secure in-vehicle communications between a vehicle's gateway and its wireless technology, according to foreign media reports. The upgraded platform offers a 4x increase in CPU performance over the previous generation and incorporates a number of innovations, including embedded AI acceleration, post-quantum cryptography support, ASIL B security islands and software-defined networking to help protect vehicles from current and future cyber-attacks and to support the transition to software-defined vehicles (SDV).
As vehicles become increasingly connected and software-defined, they face a rapidly evolving cyber threat landscape. The highly integrated OrangeBox 2.0 Connectivity Domain Controller is designed to provide the flexibility needed to defend against these threats. The integrated high-performance i.MX 94 application processor features post-quantum cryptographic acceleration as well as new AI and security guarding capabilities. This enables proactive cybersecurity that leverages machine learning to address rapidly evolving threats. It also integrates a 2.5 Gbps Ethernet switch to support software-defined networking, providing the flexibility needed for SDVs.
The original OrangeBox platform integrated the vehicle's wireless connectivity to reduce the cyber attack surface,’ said Dan Loop, vice president and general manager, Automotive Edge Processing, NXP Semiconductors. orangeBox 2.0 takes AI to the next level, protecting the vehicle by detecting anomalous communication patterns that could be a sign of an unknown cyber threat. The AI capabilities and advanced security and connectivity provided by the i.MX 94 application processor will not only support new cybersecurity protections, but will also support new features such as fleet management, predictive maintenance and more.’
The OrangeBox 2.0 development platform features the i.MX 94 application processor with an integrated eIQ Neutron Neural Processing Unit (NPU) to accelerate advanced AI-assisted firewall technology. i.MX 94 SoCs are NXP's first i.MX application processors with integrated 2.5 Gbps Ethernet switches, enabling software-defined networking and supporting the transition to SDV. The i.MX 94 is also NXP's first application processor to support post-quantum public key cryptography, making it resistant to attacks from quantum computers. The integrated EdgeLock Security Zone (Advanced Profile) and EdgeLock Accelerator (Prime) provide advanced, future-proof security features and high performance, supporting post-quantum hardware root of trust, fast secure boot, secure debugging, and secure updates; as well as real-time, high-speed message signing, authentication, and encryption for secure communications and more.
The OrangeBox 2.0 connectivity domain controller also integrates a variety of NXP wireless technologies. In addition to the features of the first generation OrangeBox platform, the new platform includes the SAF9100, which provides software-defined audio capabilities. the AW693 solution supports concurrent dual-band Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth® 5.4, designed to enable secure wireless software updates. orangeBox 2.0 also supports smart automotive access solutions based on the latest low-power Bluetooth® and Ultra Wideband (UWB) technologies from NXP. for smart car access solutions, as well as automotive security components.
