Melexis, a global microelectronics engineering company, announced that its SPI-capable embedded position sensor, the MLX90427, has been expanded to include joysticks and human-machine interfaces (HMIs) in the industrial, architectural, agricultural and medical sectors. The sensor's cost-effective design and on-chip DSP technology provide significant advantages, while its integrated spurious field interference (SFI) immunity ensures reliable and safe performance, making the MLX90427 ideal for joystick, steering wheel, and thumbwheel applications.
The MLX90427 is a state-of-the-art Hall-effect magnetic position sensor that offers better performance and lower cost than previous generations of Melexis embedded position sensors. Leveraging Melexis' deep expertise in magnetic sensing technology, the MLX90427 is designed for embedded position sensor applications and supports high-speed communication and 14-bit resolution output.
Reliable and Durable Industrial HMI Solution
For industrial applications, the MLX90427 adds safety and reliability to the system by integrating the SFI function, which maintains stable operation even in high magnetic interference environments. This feature makes it particularly suitable for industrial joystick, steering and thumbwheel controls in heavy machinery, medical equipment and automation equipment where safety is critical. In addition, their non-contact design eliminates wear and drift, significantly extending service life and reducing maintenance costs compared to mechanical potentiometers.
High Performance Application Scenarios
Ideal for joystick control and other HMI peripherals that require highly accurate, fast-response inputs, the MLX90427 outperforms magnetometer- or potentiometer-based solutions. The sensor is perfectly suited for controllers that require fast response, high accuracy and long life. Its embedded triaxial sensing element detects magnetic flux density in three directions (Bx, By and Bz) and outputs precisely calculated angles from the controller joystick without complex external processing. In addition, the MLX90427 offers cost advantages over previous generations of Melexis embedded position sensors.
Versatile Operation
The MLX90427 sensor supports multiple modes of operation, allowing it to be flexibly adapted to a wide range of deployment scenarios, from heavy machinery control to consumer applications. Suitable for a wide range of HMIs and controllers, the first of two joystick-compatible modes enables direct measurement of high-precision Alpha and Beta angles from a single MLX90427 chip (mounted below the joystick).
In environments susceptible to magnetic interference, a dual sensor configuration (one sensor per axis) is recommended in conjunction with SFI rotary mode operation. This configuration provides consistent and accurate performance, which is critical for industrial applications where reliability is critical, and the MLX90427's magnetometer mode extends its versatility by providing intuitive XYZ field measurements for applications such as turntables, combining simplicity with high accuracy.
Pushing the Limits of Existing Technology
The MLX90427 provides engineers with easier access to non-contact sensing technology by eliminating mechanical wear and drift, dramatically improving system reliability while achieving a lower cost of ownership than previous generations of Melexis magnetic sensing solutions. For consumer and industrial equipment manufacturers, the inherent robustness of non-contact sensing can dramatically increase device durability and longevity, helping engineers improve system reliability and reduce maintenance costs.
The chip's core sensing functionality is supported by analogue-to-digital converters (ADCs), a powerful digital signal processor (DSP) for complex signal processing, and output stage drivers supporting high-speed, full-duplex SPI outputs. With reliable functional safety certifications, precise factory calibration, a wide operating temperature range of -40°C to +160°C, and support for 5V and 3V power supplies, the MLX90427 ensures seamless system integration.
Voices from Melexis
The MLX90427 from Melexis not only enhances the functionality of joysticks and HMI devices, but also sets new standards in cost control and ease of use.
The MLX90427 exemplifies Melexis‘ commitment to bringing the reliability of contactless magnetic sensing technology to new applications,’ said Atanas Dikov, Marketing Manager at Melexis. With its versatility and focus on cost-effectiveness, this sensor will help engineers reshape the landscape of joystick and HMI applications, providing unprecedented accuracy, reliability and value.’
