Mingjiada evening news, on July 20, Qualcomm officially released new 4nm chips, the Snapdragon W5 Gen1 and Snapdragon W5+ Gen1 for wearable devices. According to the official introduction, compared with the previous generation product (Snapdragon wear 4100) two years ago, the power consumption has been reduced by 50%, the performance has been doubled, the size has been reduced by 30%, and the functional features have been doubled.

Taking battery life as an example, Qualcomm said that the watch with the same 300mAh battery can be used for an extra 15 hours after the W5+ is replaced.


At the same time, the process upgrade from 12nm to 4nm is also a leap. Among the high-end smart watch chips currently on the market, the S7 of the Apple Watch is 7nm, and the Exynos W920 of the Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 is 5nm.


In terms of the basic architecture of the chip, the CPU part uses 4 Cortex A53s with a maximum of 1.7GHz, plus a Cortex M55 (250MHz) co-processor, and integrates dual GPUs, including Adreno A702 (1GHz), and supports a maximum of 16GB LPDDR4 memory.


Features also support ultra-low power Bluetooth 5.3, dual-band GPS positioning, Beidou, 4G network, dual-band Wi-Fi (802.11n), eMMC 4.5, etc.


It is reported that considering the full-time working characteristics of wearable devices, the integrated coprocessor of the Snapdragon W5 platform has been upgraded from 28nm to 22nm process, which can serve real-time response, health tracking, heart rate and sleep monitoring, and local machine learning functions (ARM Ethos- U55), etc. The 4nm main processor is mainly used for high-load interactions such as calls, 3D rendering, and GPS navigation.


As planned, OPPO and Mobvoi will be the first to launch smartwatches based on the Snapdragon W5/W5+ platform, of which OPPO Watch 3 will be launched in August, and Pegatron and Compal will also assist in the development of public reference designs.
