Intel Further Enriches Xeon 6 Processor Portfolio to Provide Industry with Multiple CPU Choices for a Wide Range of Workloads
- Intel introduced the new Intel® Xeon® 6 performance core processors, delivering powerful computing for a wide range of data centre workloads with exceptional performance and up to 2x¹ AI processing performance boost.
- Designed for networking and edge applications, the new Xeon 6 processor with built-in Intel vRAN Boost technology delivers up to 2.4x2 capacity gains for radio access network (RAN) workloads.
Feb. 25 - As enterprises accelerate infrastructure modernisation to meet the needs of emerging workloads such as artificial intelligence, the demand for high-performance and power-efficient computing power is on the rise, from the data centre to the network, and from edge computing to PCs. To meet this growing demand, Intel today introduced the Xeon 6 performance core processor, which delivers superior performance for a wide range of data centre and network infrastructure workloads with outstanding energy efficiency, creating new opportunities for data centre consolidation and upgrades.
We are working to bring to market high-performing products that help our customers address key challenges and drive their businesses forward,’ said Michelle Johnston Holthaus, interim co-CEO of Intel and CEO of Intel Products. The Xeon 6 family is the CPU of choice to meet the demands of AI applications, while also delivering breakthrough networking capabilities and helping organisations reduce their total cost of ownership with high power efficiency.’
Introducing the new Intel Xeon 6 processors
The latest release of Intel Xeon 6 processors makes significant advances in both the data centre and networking portfolios.
- The Intel® Xeon® 6700/6500 performance core processors, the ideal CPU for the modern data centre, deliver an outstanding balance of performance and power efficiency. Compared to the previous generation, the Xeon 6 processor achieves an average 1.4x performance improvement across a wide range of enterprise workloads.3 As the head node CPU for AI systems, the Xeon 6 can be paired with GPUs to provide customers with a preferred combination. In addition, it delivers up to 1.5x4 AI inference performance gains with fewer cores. The Xeon 6 processor also delivers excellent performance efficiency per watt, enabling the replacement of five legacy servers with one new server on average over a five-year lifecycle5, with a ratio of up to 10:1 in some use cases, resulting in total cost of ownership (TCO) savings of up to 68 per cent6.
- The Intel Xeon 6 processor for network and edge applications is a system-on-chip (SoC) designed to deliver high performance and energy efficiency. Meet the growing demand for network and edge solutions in the AI-driven era with its built-in accelerators for virtualised radio access networks (vRANs), media, AI and network security. Thanks to Intel vRAN Boost technology, the Xeon 6 system-on-chip delivers up to a 2.4x⁷ increase in RAN capacity and a 70 per cent increase in performance per watt compared to previous generations⁸. In addition, the Xeon 6 is the first server SoC with a built-in media accelerator, the Intel Media Transcoding Accelerator, which delivers up to a 14x performance-per-watt improvement over the Intel Xeon 6538N processor⁹.
The Ideal CPU for AI Application Needs
With the growing popularity of AI applications, organisations are expected to spend as much as $153 billion on generative AI (GenAI) by 2027, while machine learning and analytics spending will total $361 billion, IDC said. Intel Xeon 6 processors are optimised to play an important role in this booming market and can be used as head node CPUs to deliver outstanding performance in traditional machine learning, small generative AI models and GPU-accelerated workloads. Intel is working with silicon, software and solution providers to build the AI ecosystem and further enhance the role of Xeon 6 as a pillar in a wide range of AI systems.
Modernising telecoms networks with superior performance
5G and AI are changing the way networks are connected, and traditional network optimisation strategies are no longer sufficient. To unlock the full potential of next-generation network connectivity technologies, telecom operators are actively adopting technologies such as network slicing, AI-powered wireless controllers and cloud-native architectures. By adopting a unified Intel Xeon platform, operators can dynamically optimise workloads and reduce costs while building scalable, flexible networks that adapt in real-time to changing customer demands, traffic patterns and market dynamics.
Key performance highlights of the Intel Xeon 6 System-on-Chip include:
- Significantly faster inference of Webroot CSI upload models, with up to 4.3x¹⁰ improvement over the Intel Xeon D-2899NT processor.
- A 3.2x¹¹¹ improvement in single-core AI RAN performance over the previous generation thanks to vRAN Boost technology.
- On the Video Edge Server, a single 38-core system can simultaneously support int8 reasoning for up to 38 camera video streams¹².
New Ethernet Solutions
To meet the growing demand for enterprise, telecom, cloud, scientific computing, edge and AI applications, Intel also introduced two new Ethernet controller and network adapter product lines. The first products include dual-port 25GbE PCIe and OCP 3.0-compliant adapters, with more configurable versions to follow during the year.
The Intel Ethernet Controller E830 and network adapters offer 200GbE bandwidth, flexible port configurations and excellent precision timing, including Precision Time Measurement (PTM). Optimised for high-density virtualised workloads, the products deliver superior security features and performance.
Optimised for control plane operation, the Intel Ethernet Controller E610 and network adapters provide 10GBASE-T connectivity with excellent power efficiency, manageability and security features that simplify network management and provide critical safeguards for network integrity.
The combination of Intel Xeon 6 processors and high-performance Ethernet connectivity provides a solid foundation for organisations to accelerate innovation and gain a competitive advantage.
