The SN65HVDA1040B-Q1 device meets or exceeds the requirements of ISO 11898 and CAN be used in applications using a controller local Area network (CAN). As a CAN transceiver, this device provides differential transmission capability for the bus and differential reception capability for the CAN controller, with signal transmission rates up to 1 megabit per second (Mbps). The signal transmission rate of a line is the number of voltage conversions performed per second, expressed in units bps (bits per second).
The device is designed to operate in particularly harsh environments and has numerous device protection features such as undervoltage lock (UVLO), overheat heat off, wide common model enclosure and ground failure protection. According to ISO 7637, the bus pins are also protected from external cross wires, -27V to 40V short circuits and voltage transients. The device meets the standards for automotive applications.

- HBM ESD classification level:
- All pins except pin 5, pin 6 and pin 7 are 3A level
- Pin 5, pin 6, and pin 7 are level 3B
