Description
The BQ77PL900DLR is a five to ten cell series-connected lithium-ion battery pack protector. With an integrated I2C communication interface, the BQ77PL900DLR can also be used as an analogue front end (AFE) for a host controller. Two LDOs (one 5 V/25 mA and one 3.3 V/25 mA) are also included and can be used to power the host controller or support circuitry.
The BQ77PL900DLR incorporates a voltage conversion system for extracting battery parameters such as individual cell voltage and charge/discharge current. Variables such as voltage protection thresholds and detection delay times are programmable via the internal EEPROM.
The BQ77PL900DLR is available as a stand-alone self-contained battery protection system (stand-alone mode). It can also be combined with a host microcontroller to provide a fuel gauge or other battery management functions for the host system (host control mode).
The BQ77PL900DLR provides comprehensive safety protection against over-voltage, under-voltage, discharge over-current and discharge short-circuit. The BQ77PL900 automatically shuts down the FET driver when the EEPROM programmable safety threshold is reached. No external components are required to configure the protection functions.
Analogue Front End (AFE) outputs allow the host controller to observe individual cell voltages and charge/discharge currents. The main controller's analogue-to-digital converter is connected to the BQ77PL900 to obtain these values.
Battery balancing can be performed automatically, or the host controller can activate battery balancing individually via the battery bypass path integrated in the BQ77PL900. An internal control register accessible via the I2C interface configures this operation. The maximum balancing bypass current is set by an external series resistor and an internal FET on-resistance (typically 400). An external bypass cell balancing FET is available as an option to increase current capability.
